Dorothy Dot Stickles (nee Gaynor), born on December 20, 1935, reflects on her life growing up in rural West Virginia. Her family descended from Irish immigrants who arrived through Ellis Island, and she was one of twelve children. Her mother, widowed during the 1918 Spanish flu, raised the children largely on her own and worked as a midwife. Dot shares stories of hardship, including the tragic deaths of two younger sisters, and the resilience of her family through poverty and labor.
