  • How do I get a library card?

    Anyone who either lives or works in Jefferson County can join the library. Membership is free and easy! Simply bring a form of ID to the circulation desk, fill out the contact information form, and receive your library card. You will then have access to all of our resources, books, DVD’s, audiobooks, magazines, newspapers, etc.

  • How many books can I check out at one time?

    For first-time check-outs, the limit is five items. After, a track record has been established and books returned, then the sky’s the limit! As long as materials are brought back on time, we encourage you to check out as many as your heart desires. Keep reading!

  • Are there late fees for books?

    No, we are a fine-free library. We believe in providing as much access to resources as possible to every member of our community. However, we believe that the respect we have for our patrons should be returned by responsible usage of the material. There are due dates for the material and the borrower will be reminded by phone or email, when that date is approaching.

  • Who can use the computers? How does it work?

    To use a computer, you must have a library card, unless you are a guest in the community. Sign in to a computer at the circulation desk and pick up a number of a computer. There is a limit of 30 minutes on a computer if others are waiting; otherwise, a computer may be used for as long as needed. It is free to use a computer.

  • What about printing, copying, and faxing?

    Printing is 25 cents per page. The fax machine is $1 per page.  Scanning is available by request. The circulation desk will help you with copying and faxing. Your print job can be picked up at the circulation desk.

  • What are your hours?

    Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 9am-5pm; Tuesday and Thursday from 9am-6pm; and Saturday from 9am-1pm. Closed Sundays. We stay open later during the summer months, so be sure to check regularly for updates.

  • Where are you located?

    Our address is 200 E. Washington Street, Charles Town, WV. We are one block up from the courthouse on the corner of Washington and Samuel Streets, across from the Chamber of Commerce building.

  • Can I search for books if the library isn’t open?

    Certainly! Just browse our online catalog. You can also reserve books online and pick them up at your convenience. Don’t forget to leave a book review online, a special perk of your membership!

  • Can I return books if the library is closed?

    Yes; simply drop off your books in the book depository, located to the right of the main entrance doors. Any books deposited there will be checked in the next morning for the previous date as a courtesy to you.

  • I have trouble with computers. Can someone help me?

    We are always happy to help. Ask at the circulation desk and someone will come to help.

  • I want to participate in your programs. How do I join?

  • May I donate my old books to the library?

    Yes; we accept your books as long as they are in good, clean condition. We cannot accept textbooks more than five years old, nor encyclopedias. If a book has water damage, mold, is dirty, etc. we cannot accept it. Please drop off any book donations at the circulation desk during regular hours.

  • Does the library take monetary donations?

    • Hi Allan, we do not have a process for temporary cards at this time. Without a card you can still use our computers, make copies for $.25, or use our reading room with your own laptop or read our material. Thank you for your interest in the Charles Town Library.
